                                  CHAPTER XIIl – त्रयोदशाऽध्यायः

             आयुर्भावःDETERMINATION OF LONGIVITY

“  ll  जाते कुमारे सति पूर्वमार्यैरायुर्विचिन्त्यं हि ततः फलानि  l

       विचारणीया गुणिनिस्थितेतद्गुणाः समस्ताः खलु लक्षणज्ञैः  ll  “...............१.

1.    When a Male Child is born, the elders of the family should consider as priority about the longevity of the child. Only after that they should check other results.  If there are any other merits, a good Predictive astrologer, who possess deep knowledge in Astrology.

“  ll   केचिद्यथाधानविलिग्नमन्ये शीर्षोदयं भूपतनं हि केचित्  l

         होराविदश्र्चेतनकाययोन्योर्वियोगकालं कथयन्ति लग्नं  ll  “..............२.

2.    Considerable differences of opinion regarding the ASCENDANT at birth prevail among the PUNDITS in Astrology as to which time is to be taken as the ASCENDANT.  Some PUNDITS say that we must take the impregnation time (आधान समय), some others say it should be the time when the Head (शिरस्) appears and many others say it should be the time when the child falls on the ground (भूपतनम्). Yet some Pundits are of the opinion that the ASCENDANT time should be the actual time when the child falls on the ground and fully separated from the mother.   [ ( Fiends, although I am not an expert in this field, I am of the opinion that the ASCENDANT should be the actual time when the HEAD OF THE CHILD APPEARS. Since, that is the time when the rays of all PLANETS fall FIRST on the child). However,

Now-a-days, we take only the time given by the hospital authorities and hence even an expert in astrology will not be able to give correct prediction,]  

“  ll  आद्वादशाब्दात्ररयोनिजन्मनामायुष्काला निश्र्चयितुं न शक्यते  l

        मात्रा च पित्रा कृतपापकर्मणा बालग्रहैर्नाशमूपैति बालकः  ll  “.............३.

3.     In the case of creatures that give birth to off springs, it is not possible to determine the longevity with in first 12 years of birth, since it is not possible to know the sinful acts of father and mother in their previous births since the children are susceptible to destruction by BALAGRAHAS.

“  ll  आद्ये चतुष्के जननीकृताद्यैर्मध्ये च पित्रार्जितपापसङ्धैः  l

        बालस्तदन्त्यासु चतुःशरत्सु स्वकीयदोषैः समुपैति नाशम्  ll  “............४.

4.     If the death of the child occurs within the first four years, it must be due to the sin committed by the mother and the death during the 2^nd four years by the father and the 3^rd four years due to the sins committed by the child during his previous birth.

“  ll  तद्दोषशान्तै प्रतिजन्मतार माद्वदशाब्दं जपहोमपूर्वम्  l

        आयुष्करं कर्म विधाय ताता बालं चिकित्सादिभिरेव रक्षेत्  ll  “..........५.

5.     To obliterate this evil effect the father of the child should arrange performance of POOJAS and HOMAS etc. on the birth asterism every year (प्रति जन्म तार) up to the age of 12 years of the child.  Generally we perform AYUSH HOMAM  and Nava Graha Homam for this purpose. PRR.

Also this is to be supplemented with Medical Treatment if required.

“  ll  अष्टौ बालारिष्टमादौ नराणां योगारिष्टं प्राहुराविंशति स्यात्  l

          अल्पं चाद्वात्रिंशतं मध्यमायुश्र्चासप्तस्यः पूर्णमायुः शतान्तम्  ll  “................६.

6.        Here-in  Manthreswara explains what is called BAALAARISHTAM, YOGAARISHTAM, ALPAAYUS, MADHYAMAAYUS and POORNAAYUS :-

The first EIGHT YEARS OF A MALE is called BAALAARISHTAM PERIOD Or in ENGLISH the ILL EFFECTS IN CHILDREN. Pundits in Astrology call the first 20 years as YOGARISHTA and up-to the age of 32 years it is called as ALPAYUS,  If a person lives up-to 70 years, it is called MADHYAMAYUS and if a person lives up-to 100 years, it is called POORNAYUS.

“  ll  नृणां वर्षशतं ह्यायुस्तस्विंस्त्रेघा विभज्यते  l

        अल्पं मध्यं दीर्घमायुरित्येतत्सर्वसम्मतम्   ll  “...............७.

7.  100 years of age is generally recognized by all as the span of life (पूर्णायुस) for human beings. Further there is universal recognition for ALPAYUS (short life),  MADHYAMAAYUS (middle life period) and POORNAAYUS (full life span). 

“  ll  मृत्युः  स्याद्दिनमृत्युरुग्विषाघटिकालेऽथ तिष्येऽम्बुभे

        ताताम्बासुतमातुलान्पदवशात्त्वाष्टे च हन्यात्तथा  l

        मूलर्क्षे पितृमातृवंशविलयं तस्यान्त्यपादेश्रियं

        सार्पे व्यस्तमिदं फलं न शुभसम्बन्दं विलग्नं यदि  ll  “.................८.

8.     If a child is born in the EVIL YOGAS stated below it will die as soon as it is born. The EVIL YOGAS are :-

        (1) DINA MRITHYU  : This YOGA will not have no bad effects if the child is born during the NIGHT.  This YOGA is said to be present if the child is born during the DAY TIME in asterisms of the 1^st QUARTER OF Dhanishta and Hastha (അവിട്ടം,അത്തം ആദ്യ പാദങ്ങള്‍, - அவிட்டம், ஹஸ்தம் முதல் பாதங்கள்)., 2^nd QUARTERS of Uththarabhaadra and AAshlesha (ഉത്രട്ടാതി, ആയില്യം 2ആം പാദങ്ങള്‍., -  உத்திரட்டாதி, ஆயில்யம் 2வது பாதங்கள்)., and the 4^th QUARTER of BharaniI and Moola (ഭരണി, മൂലം – 4ആം പാദങ്ങള്‍, பரணி, மூலம் நான்காவது பாதங்கள்).

     (2) DINA ROGAM :  This YOGA will take effect if the birth of the child takes place during the DAY TIME in 1st Quarter of ASLESHA and UTHARABHADRA (ആയില്യത്തിന്‍റെയും ഉത്രട്ടാതിയുടേയും ഒന്നാം പാദത്തില്‍ ജനനം, - குழந்தைபிறப்பு ஆயில்ல்யம் அல்லது உத்திரட்டாதி ஒன்னாம் பாதத்தில்).,

In the 2^nd Quarter of BHARANI and MOOLA (ഭരണിയുടെയും മൂലത്തിന്‍റെയും 2ആം പാദത്തിലും, - பரணி அல்லது மூலம் இரண்டாம் பாதம்)., - or in the 3^rd Quarter of Uthara Phalguni and Sravana (ഉത്രംനക്ഷത്തിന്‍റെയും തിരുവോണം 3ആം പാദത്തിലും-உத்திரம் அல்லது திருவோணம் நக்ஷத்திரங்களின் 3ஆம் பாதத்திற்கும்) -., or in the 4^th Quarter of the asterisms SWATHI and MRUGASHIRA (ചോതിയുടേയും മകീരത്തിന്‍റെയും 4ആം പാദത്തിലും- ஸ்வாதீ, மிருகசிரா நக்ஷத்திரங்களின் நான்காவது கால்க்கும்) PLEASE NOT THAT IF THE BIRTH TAKES PLACE DURING NIGHT WHEN THE ASTERISM SAID ABOVE, THEN THERE IS NO ILL EFFECT.

              (3) VISHA GHATIKA :  All stars (asterisms) have VISHA GHATIKAS as given here-under (വിഷഘടിക – விஷகடிகை) :-

(1)  Aswini – 50-54, (2) Bharani 24-28.(3)  Krithika 30-34 (4) Rohini 40-44, (5) Mrugashira 14-18, (6) Aridra (7) Punarvasu 30-34, (8) Pushya 20-24 , (9) Aslesha 32-36, (10) Makha 30-34, (11) Poorvaphalguni 20-24, (12) Utharaphalguni 18-22, (13) Hastham 21-35, (14) Chithra 20-24, (15) Swathy 14-18, (16) Vishaakham 14-18,  (17) Anuradha 10-14, (18) Jyeshta 14-18, (19) Moolam 56-60, (20) poorvaashaadam 24-28, (21)  Utharaashaadam 20-24, (22) Sravanam 10-14, (23 Dhanishta 10-14, (24) Shathabhishak 18-22, (25) Poorvabhaadra 16-20, (26) Utharabhaadra 24-28, (27) Revathy 30-34. This is given in detail in JATHAKA PAARIJAATHAM Thus :-

“  ll  यदि विषघतिकायामष्तमे पापयुक्ते

       विषशिखि भवशस्त्रैर्जायते तस्य मृत्युः l

       बहुदिविचुरयुक्ते लग्नपे साष्टमेशे

       वहुजनमृतिकाले मृत्युमेति प्रजातः ll “ ...जा.पा.:११२

Meaning as given by B.Shri. B. Subrahmanya Shaastri : If a person be born in VISHAGHATIKA when the 8th BHAVA, is occupied by malefic planets, his death will be caused by poison or firearms when the lord of the rising sign is in conjunction with several planets whereof one is the Lord of the 8th BHAVA, the death of the person concerned will be simultaneous with the death of a large number.

He has given many notes below it, which are ommited herein due to space constrained. 

 

If the birth of the child takes place DEATH of the given person below,   will occur :-

(a) 1^st Quarter of PUSHYA , POORVAASHAADA & CHITHRA : FATHER OF THE CHILD,

(b) 2^nd Quarter of the above-said asterisms : MOTHER.

(c) 3^rd Quarter of the above-said asterisms  : THE CHILD HIMSELF.,and

(d) 4^th Quarter of the above-said asterisms : UNCLE (Mother’s brother) will die.

In other words it is പിതാ, മാതാ, താന്‍, അമ്മാവന്‍ - அப்பா, அம்மா, தானே, மாமா.

However subject to the affliction of the ASCENDANT by the way of association, glance and without any

benefics when the birth takes place of the child in the asterism of MOOLA  the destruction of the father, mother or the family itself is if the Moon situates in the 1^st, 3nd and 3^rd quarters respectively. However  PROSPERITY IS TO BE PEDICTED if the birth of the child occurs. In other words, there will be prosperity, and in coming of wealth if the birth of the child takes place in the 4th QUARTER of MOOLA STAR. Please predict in opposite if the birth takes place in ASHLESHA STARDOM. In other words reverse the effect as 4^th Quarter in the case of father, 3^rd Quarter in the case of Mother, 2^nd  Quarter in the case of family and 1^st Quarter in case of wealth and prosperity.

In “Kalaprakaashika” DINA ROGA is described as follows :-

“  ll वसुहस्तौ विशाखार्द्रं बुध्न्याहि याम्यनैर्ऋते l

     द्वन्द्वेषु च चतुर्ष्वंशाः क्रमशो मृत्यवो हि चेतम् ll

     सार्पबुध्न्यौ याम्यमूलेश्रोणार्थम्णेऽनीलेन्दुभे l

    रोगास्तद्वद्द्वयेऽपिन्दोःकालेतु बलिनोऽशुभाः ll  “

If the birth occurs during the first quarter of DHANISHTA, HASTHA, VISHAKHA and ARDRA; during the 3rd quarter of UTHARABHADRA and ASHLESHA and the 4th quarter of Bharani and Moolacan only be called as DINA MRUTHYU and powerful evil YOGA only takes place if the birth is during the DAYTIME.

“   ll  पापाप्तेक्षितराशिसंधिजनने सद्यो विनाशं ध्रुवम्

         गण्डान्ते पितृ मातृहा शिशुमृतिर्जीवेद्यति क्ष्मापतिः  l

         जातः सन्धिचतुष्टयेऽप्यशुभसंयुक्तेक्षिते स्यान्मृति-

         र्मृत्योर्भागगते च सा सति विधौ केन्द्रेऽष्टमे वा मृतिः  ll  “..............९.

9.  When the birth takes place when a RASI is in its ending point and if this RASI is associated with or aspected by a malefeic planet, then the child will die immediately without any doubt. If the birth of the child takes place at GANTANTHA (गण्डान्त) ( junction beween three pairs of stars; a junction of Pisces and Aries, Cancer and Leo and Scorpio ) , the father, mother or the child itself will die.  If the child survives by any chance he will become a KING. The child born in the Junctionassociated with or aspected by malefics will not see the next sunrise.  The result will be the same if  CHANDRA attains this position in any sign or is positioned in a QUADRANT or the 8^th HOUSE.

“  ll  चान्द्रं रूपं लोकशूरो वरज्ञःकुड्ये चित्रं भाग्यलोके मुखानाम्  l

        मेने राज्यं मृत्युभागाःप्रदिष्टा मेषादीनां वर्णसंख्यौर्हिमांशोः  ll  “............१०.

10.   Death is indicated when CHANDRA attains Mesha and other signs be respectively 26, 12, 13, 25, 24, 11, 26, 14, 13, 25, 5 and 12. (see also JATHAKA PAARIJAATHAM translated by B.Shri. Subrahmania Shaastrigal in chapter 1 page 38 where-in this is given in detail.)  

“  ll  दानं धेनो रुद्र रौद्री मुखेन भाग्यो भानुर्गोत्र जाया नखेन  l

        पुत्री नित्यं मृत्युभागाः क्रमेण मेषादीनां तेषु जातो गतायुः  ll  “.............११.

11.   Some astrological Pundits also take the following MRITHYUNHAAGAS of the ASCENDANT from Aries (मेष) onwards respectively  8, 9, 22, 22, 25,  14, 4, 23, 18, 20, 21 and 10. 

“  ll  रन्द्रे केन्द्रेषु पापैरुदयनिधनगैर्वथ लग्नास्तयोर्वा

        लग्नेऽब्जेवोग्रमध्ये व्ययमृतिरिपुगे दुर्बले शीतभानौ  l

        क्षीणेन्दौ साशुभे वा तनुमदगुरुधिभाजि रध्रास्तगोग्रै –

        मृत्युः स्यादाशु केन्द्रे न यदि शुभखगाः सद्युतिर्वीक्षणं वा  ll  “................१२.

12.  During the following Planetary dispositions, a child will die soon after the birth :-

      (a) When malefics occupy the 8^th House or if they occupy Quadrants.,

      (b) If malefics are in the KENDRA and the 8^th House.,

      (c) When the KENDRA AND THE 7^th House are occupied by malefics., 

      (d) If CHANDRA and the KENDRA are in between malefics.,

      (e) When the waning moon (क्षीणेन्दु) is positioned in the 6^th, 8^th or 12^th House.,

      (f) When the waning moon with malefic planets occupy Lagna ,5^th, 7^th or the 9^th House.,

      (g) When malefic planets occupy 7^th and 8^th Houses..

      (h) When no benefic planets occupy or aspect quadrants.

“  ll  जन्मेशोऽथ विलग्नपो यदि भवेद्दस्थोऽबलो वत्सरै –

        सद्राशिप्रमितैश्र्च मारयति तन्मासैर्द्गागाणाधिपः l

        अंशेशो दिवसस्तथा यदि मृ्तिर्द्वित्र्यादियोगान्वहू –

        नालोच्य प्रवदेत्सुताष्टमगतैः पापैररिष्टं शिशोः  ll  “...............१३.

13.  When the Lord of ASCENDANT is weak or when the Lord of the SIUGN occupied by CHANDRA is weak and badly placed that is in th 6^th, 8^th or 12^th house, the child born in such a circumstance within as much years represented by the sign from ARIES (MESHA).

If the Lord of the DECANTE (Note :- All signs (RAASI) have three DECANTE each having 10 Degs.  In other words Each division of 10 Deg. Has a ruler which can be called as sub-ruler or co-ruler . Once a student of astrology is well conversant the TRIPLICATE called FIRE, EARTH, AIR AND WATER, it will become easy for him to determine the Sub-Ruler of each DECANTE) of MOON or ASCENDANT is weak or placed in a bad position, the child will die within months represented by the sign of DECANTE.

If the Lord of DECANTE of LAGNA NAVAMSA or CHANDRA NAVAMSA is weak and badly placed in the 6^th ,8^th. Or 12^th , the child born in such circumstances will die within  the number of days indicated by it.

The Astrologer should carefully  study the planetary dispositions and predict only after taking all the above circumstances into consideration.

“  ll  लग्नेन्द्वोस्तदधीसयोरपि मिथो लग्नेशरन्ध्रेशयो –

        र्द्रेक्काणास्वनवंशकादापि मिथस्तद्द्वादशांशात्क्रमात्  l

        आयुर्दीर्घसमाल्पतां चरनझंगैश्र्चरेऽथ स्थिरे

        ब्रूयादद्वन्द्वचरस्थिरैरुभयभेः स्थास्नुद्विदेहाटनैः  ll  “...............१४.

14.  Please note the following 3 pairs :-

         (i) ASCENDANT :  Decante Sign (Raasi)  & MOON : Dacante Sign.

        (ii) ASCENDANT’s NAMAAMSHA RAASI & MOON’s NANAAMSHA RAASI

       (iii) ASCENDANT’s LORD’s  DWAADASHAMSHA SIGN & MOONs LORD’s DWADASHAMSHA SIGN

Check up whether they are in CHARA, STHIRA or UBHAYA RAASI and according to the table given below, pronounce the judgement as given hereunder :-

“  ll  लग्नाधीशशुभाः क्रमाद्बहुसमाल्पायुंषि केन्द्रादिगाः

        रन्ध्रेशोग्रखगास्तथा यदि गता व्यस्तं विदध्युः फलम्  l

        जन्मेशाष्टमनाथयोरुदयपच्छिद्रेशयोर्मैत्रतो

        भास्वल्लग्नपयाश्र्चिरायुराहितेऽल्पायुः समे मध्यमः  ll  “..............१५.

15.  If the ASCENDANT and all benefic planets are seen placed in QUADRANT the native will have DEERGHAYUS.,

       If all the above are placed in PANAPARA the Native will have MADHYAMAYUS., If all of them are placed in   

       AAPOKLIMA, then the Native will be ALPPAYU (Short-Lived).

       Please predict in the reverse order if the LORD OF THE 8^TH HOUSE and MALEFIC PLANETS occupy similar

       positions.  The ASTROLOGER should ascertain the FRIENDSHIP OR OTHERWISE OF PLANETS given herein.

       (a) The LORD OF THE HOUSE WHERE CHANDRA IS PLACED AND THAT OF THE 8^TH HOUSE   

       FROM WHERE MOON IS PLACED, (b) LORD OF THE HOUSE WHERE LAGNA IS PLACED

       ANDTHAT OF THE 8^TH HOUSE FROM LAGNA, THE LORD OF THE HOUSE WHERE SUN IS

       PLACED AND THAT OF THE LAGNA . If they are placed in friendly HOUSES,  then the Astrologer may predict as

       DEERGHAAYUSHMAN, if they are NEUTRALS then MADHYAMAAYUSHMAN AND IF THEY ARE INNIMMICAL

       THEN ALPPAAUSHMAN.

“  ll  लग्नाधिपो लग्ननवांशनायको जन्मेश्र्वरो जन्मनवांशनायकः

         स्वस्वाष्टमेशाद्यदि चेद्वलान्वितो दीर्घायुषः स्युविपरीतमन्यथा  ll  “..................१६.

16.  When the LORD OF THE RAASI in which the LAGNA situates and the LORD OF LAGNA NAVAAMSHA are stronger than the LORD OF THE 8^TH  HOUSE IN WHICH EACH OF THEM SITUATES the NATIVE will have DEERGHAAYUS. The result will be the same if THE LORD OF THE SIGN IN WHICH THE MOON SITUATES OR  LORD OF CHANDRA NAVAAMSHA. IN CASE THEY DIFFER THEN THE RESULT WILL BE OPPOSITE.

“  ll  लग्नेश्वरादतिबलि निधनेश्वरोऽसौ

         केन्द्रस्थितो निधनरिःफगतैश्र्च पापौः  l

         तस्यायुरल्पमथवा यदि मध्यमायु –

           रुत्साहङ्कटवशाल्परमायुरेति  ll  “................१७.

17.   The life of the NATIVE will be SHORT, provided the LORD OF THE 8^TH  HOUSE has more strength than the LORD OF THE ASCENDANT posited in a KENDRA(QUADRANT) , and IF MALEFICS OCCUPY THE 8^TH and the 12^TH HOUSES,  then the NATIVE WILL BE SHORT LIVED. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE NATIVE WILL BE HAVING AN UNPREDICTABLE HAPPINESS AND MISERY IF HE HAS MADHYAMAYUS OR DEERGHAYUS.

“  ll नरेऽल्पायुर्योगे प्रथमभागणे नरपति शने –

        र्द्वितीये मद्ध्यायुर्यदि भवति दीर्घायुषि सति  l

        तृतीये निर्याणं स्फुटजशनिगुर्वर्कहिमगून्

        दशां भुक्तिं कष्टमपि वदति निश्चित्य सुमतिः ll  “..............१८.

18.  Add the REKHAAMSHAS( LONGITUDES)  of RAVI, CHANDRA, GURU and SHANI. If a person is ALPAYU (Short Lived ) then the end will come when SHANI in transit of the first cycle of 7 Deg, of GEMINI. If it is in the 2^nd CYCLE the death will be during MADHYAMAYUR and if it is in the 3^rd Cycle DEERGHAYUS can be pronounced . A good PREDICTIVE ASTROLOGER will predict this after checking also the DASHA and BHUKTHI.

“  ll  सपापो लग्नेशो रविहतरुचिर्नीचरिपुगो

        यदा दुःस्थानेषु स्थितिमुपगतो गोचरवशात्  l

        तनौ वा तद्योगो यदि निधनमाहुस्तनुभृतां

        नवांशद्द्रेक्काणाच्छिशिरकरलग्नादपि वदेत्  ll  “.........१९.

19.   The astrologer may predict the death of the Native, if the LORD OG ASCENDANT is associated or /and eclipsed by the SUN’S RAYS or in an inimical sign or depressed .  According to Manthreswara, again,  if the Lord of Lagna occupies the 6th , 8^th or 12^th 0r if the Lagna some-how gets associated with any of the said houses ,the Death of the Native is to be predicted.  The death of the Native may also be predicted from the NAVAMSA LAGNA, the DECANTE LAGNA. Or from the Sign in which CHANDRA occupies.

“  ll  राशी तदारूढगृहाधिपश्च लग्नाधिनाथश्च यदा त्रयोऽमी  l

        गुणाधिकाः सद्ग्रहदृष्टियुक्ता गुनाधिकं तं कथयन्ति कालम्  ll  “............२०.

20.  If CHANDRA, the Lord of the HOUSE in which CHANDRA is posited and the Lord of the sign in which LAGNA is posited are in good houses  or are associated with or aspected by  good planets and have greater strength , the astrologer should declare as very very auspicious to the NATIVE,  which will make him prosperous and happy in all ways.

“  ll  लग्नाधिपोऽतिबलवानशुभैरदृष्टः

        केन्द्रस्थितः शुभखगैरवलोक्यमानः  l

        मृत्युं विहाय विदधाति स दीर्घमायुः

        सार्द्धं गुनैर्बहुभीरूर्जित राजलक्ष्म्या  ll  “……………२१.

21.  When the LORD OF ASCENDANT is not aspected by nor associated with MALEFIC PLANETS and have good strength and glanced by or associated by BENEFIC PLANETS and occupies a quadrant the child will have a long life span with all good qualities will have numerous virtues or even might become a KING.

“  ll  सर्वातिशाथ्यतिबलः स्फुरदंशुजालो
