CHILDREN DELIVERED BY A LOW CASTE WOMAN AND A BRAHMIN WHO WERE BROUGHT UP BY PERSONS BELONGING TO TWELVE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES
(TO READ INDIAN LANGUAGES GIVEN HEREUNDER , PLEASE CONVERT THIS TO UNICODE UTF 8)

Friends,
This is a story I read in ഐതിഹ്യമാല (ஐதிஹ்ய மாலை) written by KOTTARATHTHIL SHANKUNNI an AMBALA VASI of Kerala. It might not be an exaggeration if I say that one cannot find any old household of KERALA without a copy of this valuable book. AITHIHYA means legends and Maala means Garland, Hence AITHIHYA MAALA means a GARLAND OF LEGENDS. The difference between Legends and Myths is while Legends, ARE STORIES about real people who are famous for doing something brave or extraordinary, Myths are traditional stories occurring in a timeless past. They involve supernatural elements and are beyond the frontiers of logic. A story as per dictionary is “a narrative, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest, amuse, or instruct the hearer or reader.” Stories need not be TRUE. Both Legends, and myths contain stories.
Friends , before I start with the Legend few words about the author of AITHIHYA MALA will not be out of place. Kottarathil Shankunni was born on 23rd March 1855 in KOTTAYAM as the second son of Sriman Vasudevanunni. Sriman Shankunni’ real name was also Vasudevan and as a practice Ladies never used to say their Husband’s name in olden days( The present generation of women call their husbands by name and say அவன், நீ ; അവന്‍, നീ etc.without giving any respect to the husbands and treating them as friends).. Hence his mother started calling him as THANKU which later on became SHANKU. UNNI was added to his name because he was an Ambalavasi Brahmin. Shri Sankunni had no school education but studied under some country teachers called ASAAN (ആശാന്‍) . He learned SIDDAROOPA (सिद्धरूपा) from Manarkkad Shankara Wariar when he was 17 years old and Raghu Vamsham, Magham, Naishadham etc (रघुवंशं, माघां, नैषधं) and some literatures in AYURVEDA from Vayaskara Aryan Narayanan Moosad. At the age of 36 he wrote SUBHADRAA HARANAM in MANI PRAVAALAM STYLE. In the year 1904 he was awarded with a Medal and a title “KAVI THILAKAN” by the Maha Rajah of Cochin. There is no other person other than Kottaraththil Shakunni who got such awards from Cochin, British Malabar and Travancore.
Shankunni’s mother died in Malayalam Year 1048. Afterwards he married for the first time in Malayalam Year 1056 but she was short lived and died within a year. He married for the 2nd time after about five years. Since he could not get a child through her , he married for the third time. Since she also could not bear a son for him , he adopted (ദത്ത്‌,தத்து) the 2nd son of Sri. Evoor PanavEli Krishna Sharma. KOTTARATHTHIL SHANKUNNI died on 22nd July, 1937.
He has written about 59 Books on varied subjects.
As I have written above, this story is taken from AITHIHYAMAALA written by him. All of you might have heard about Vararuchi who was the son of Govindswamy, a famous Brahmin and a learned astrologer. He was the head of the SABHA OF PUNDITS of the famous king VIKRAMADITHYA, to whom the king used to seek advise on different matters. One day morning the king asked the PUNDITS, AS TO WHICH SHLOKA WAS THE BEST IN VALMIKI RAMAYANA. All Pundits told that all verses were equally good. The king was not satisfied with this answer hence asked Brahma Shri Vararuchi for the answer. When VARARUCHI also could not answer, the Maharajah gave him 41 days’ time to find out the answer and also told him not to go back to the SABHA if he was unable to get the answer. SRI. VARARUCHI reluctantly left the court feeling ashamed. In those days there were no proper roads . People had to go through dense forest etc. to reach from one village to another. While Sri. Vararuchi was going through a dense forest became tired due to the weariness of travel and saw a well paved banyan tree and thought of taking rest on the pavement of the tree. He , therefore kept his small bundle of clothes etc. as pillow and lied down on the pavement to take rest. He could not get sleep and was lying by closing his eyes by saying “LET VANADEVATHAS( The fairies of Forest permanently staying on the banyan tree ) SAVE ME FROM DANGERS”. It so happened at about midnight some Vanadevathas from outside came flying and sat on the banyan tree and told the vanadevathas who were permanently staying there that they were going to a place where a delivery was to take place to drink the blood and carcasses and also asked the Vanadevathas settled down on the banyan tree whether they were not accompanying them. The Vanadevathas who were residing on the tree replied that they were not able to go since a Maha Brahmana was sleeping underneath asking them to save him from disasters, and requested the other Vanadevathas to go over to them and tell where was the delivery and other details. They agreed and flew away. However, as promised they came, as the dawn was approaching , to the Tree and told the VANA DEVATHAS who were guarding the Brahmin thus “ delivery was in a PARAYA’S HUT (കുടില്‍, குடில்) and the PARACHCHI ( പറയ പുല്ലി പറച്ചി സ്ത്രീ.ലിം ) gave birth to a female child and this child will be married by this fool who is sleeping under this BANYAN TREE who does not know that the best Shloka in VALMIKI RAMAYANA is :-
रामम् दशरथं विद्धि मां विद्धि जनकातमजाम्
अयोध्यामटवीं विद्धि गच्छ तात यथा सुखम्
(Valmiki Ramayana, AyodhyA KaaNdha, Sargam 40, Shloka 10.)
Saying this the Vana Devathas who came flew away. Vararuchi, who was not sleeping but simply was lying under the Banyan tree, closing his eyes heard this. While he was happy that he came to know the best verse in VALMIKI RAMAYANA was very unhappy to note that he was destined to marry the PARAYA girl child.
The Maharajah was upset in sending Vararuchi who did not return even after completing 40 days. On the 41st day Vararuchi returned, and seeing his face itself all came to know that he had the answer with him. The Maharajah asked Vararuchi “ What happened ? Could you find out” for which Vararuchi said “ by God’s grace, I could get the answer “ and told the above stanza and gave ten different meanings to the verses. Out of this , only two meanings are given in AIthihya Maala, which are as hereunder :-
This verse is said by Sumithra to her son Lakshmana before they started to live 14 years in forest. One meaning is:
rAmam dasaraTtham vidDhi = Think Rama is Dasaratha, your father. mAM vidDhi janakaathmajaaM = Think Seetha like your mother. ayOdhyAmatavImvidDhi = Think forest as Ayodhya. Gacca thAtha yatTha sukhaM =go my son happily.
The Second meaning is :
“rAmaM dasaratTham vidDhi =Know that Rama is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu whose vehicle (VAAHANA) is bird (PAKSHI). janakAthmajAm mAm vidDhi = know thy, sItha is Maha Lakshmi. ayOdhyAm atavIm vidDhi “= Think ayOdhya without rAma is a forest. Therefore my son please accompany them happily.
Hearing the 10 ways of interpretations by Vararuchi the King was very happy. Then when all were chi chatting, Vararuchi told the King thus “ Oh! Maharajan, On checking her horoscope, I found that before the child attains three yeas of age this kingdom will be destroyed. From today you will start finding the adverse effects. The King was startled but did not like the idea of killing the small innocent baby senn life only on the previous day. Hence all the pundits founded a way that is to put the child on a boat made of dried Banana Trunk after fixing a nail on the centre ( शिरस) of the head of the baby and attaching to it a country torch (ചൂട്ട്) and send the baby through the river out of the kingdom. All including Vararuchi agreed to this plan. Accordingly the king ordered to deport the child through the river by affixing a nail on her head.
The child was deported in the said manner on the next day. Vararuchi was very happy beacause a difficult situation which was to come to him was averted. A Brahmin who was taking bath saw the child and thinking that she was the gift of God as he had no children and took her to his house and looked after the child as his own.
After few years Vararuchi was going on a travel. On the way , he felt hungry and entered a brahmin’s house for food.( In olden days Brahmins used to enter any brahmin’s house for meals.) The owner of the house seeing the Brahmin entering the house told him (Vararuchi), to take bath and go soon back to his house since meals were ready. For this Vararuchi told that he had some problems and if it could be solved by the house owner he had no objection to dine in hjs house. The house owner then asked him to tell the problems to which Vararuchi told that as soon as he finished the bath he wanted one വീരവാളിപ്പട്ടു (a small red silk) to wear, and then you must give meals to hundred people before you serve meals to me, you must keep 108 curries to serve me, after meals I must eat three people and 4 people should lift me to sleep. The house owner was perturbed and was thinking what to do. Seeing this his daughter called him and told him there was nothing which cannot be done and told him by red silk cloth he meant only a small cloth to conceal his private part. (കോണകം. கோமணம். कोपीनं ) ; the meaning of his asking to give food for 108 people is only that he wanted to perform VAISYAM ( वैस्यदेवं, வைசியம்,വൈശ്യം) . It is said that performing Vaisya is equal to giving food 100 Devathas; then the meaning of 108 curries is that he wanted Ginger curry and again by saying that he wanted to eat three people he meant only the he wanted to eat Betel leaves, betel nuts and a little lime (தாம்பூலம். മുറുക്കാന്‍, तांपूलं) ; then again by saying that he should be lifted by four people before sleeping is that he wanted to sleep on a cot. Please ask him to go and take bath and come soon and also tell him all will be arranged. The girl got a Red cloth piece , HAVIS for VAISYA , Sandal paste and flowers for POOJA and for meals a small quantity of ginger curry and other things he asked.
Vararuchi came to know that all were done as per his wishes, by the intelligent Brahmin girl and hence requested for her hand in marriage to the house owner. The house owner happily agreed and the lady thus became his wife. Vararuchi was very much attached to this lady and thought that he was very fortunate in getting this lady as his wife. One day when they were talking each other after food the lady was keeping her head on the lap of Vararuchi and Vararuchi was fondling her head. Suddenly he saw a wound mark on her head and asked her what it was. She explained everything she knew, but could not tell that she was a Paraya girl since she did not know it. However, Vararuchi knew it, but consoled himself by thinking “लिखिथमपि ललाटे प्रोजथ्धितुमम् कः समर्थः” “ What ever is written on the fore head who can change it ? “ and and further resolving that he should spend his rest of the life by wandering from place to place. Thus while they were going from one place to another, his wife gave birth to twelve children out of which one was a girl child. Whenever she gave birth to a child Vararuchi asked her whether the child had mouth and if she said YES, then used to say to leave the child since the child with mouth will survive.(വായുള്ള കുഞ്ഞിന്നു ദൈവം ഇരയും കല്‍പ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്) These children were taken and brought up by people of different castes or category. When the lady was to delver the 12th child she thought that this time she should say that the child had no mouth and further thought that at least then HE would allow her to have the child and the one day she delivered the child but said that the child had no mouth. Vararuchi allowed her to take the child but when they reached a hill he told to leave the child there and established a temple for the child. This child is later known as VAAYILLAA KUNNILAPPAN (வாயில்லா குன்றிலப்பன், വായില്ലാകുന്നിലപ്പന്‍) . The names of the 12 children is given as a poem thus :-

(The Verse in Tamil Language)
“மேஷ(ள)த்தொள் அக்னிஹோத்ரி ரஜகன் உளியநூர் –
த்தச்சனும் பிபின்னெ வள்ளோன் (திருவள்ளுவர்)
வாயில்லாகுன்நிலப்பன் வடுதல மருவும்

ங்கத்தெழும் பாணனாரும்

சாத்தனும் பாக்கனாரும்.”
Friends, Sri. KOTTARATHTHYL SHANKUNNI has written more about these children. I confine to this story here only, since this is the subject matter. I shall conclude now after giving the names of each child :

THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD "PARABRAHMA" – WE MAY CALL HIM BY ANY NAME – A HINDU THOUGHT_

During the early periods, man never thought of God. He was after his own security against all sorts of external threats. Once he achieved it, he started thinking about God.He made God in his own image. As reproduction was one major item, he considered GOD in that form of LINGA and prakruthi i.e. NATURE as goddess. Hence in most countries the ULTIMATE used to be worshipped as LINGA SWAROOPI and Nature is worshipped as YONI. This , I have written many times but instead of understanding my view some Brahmin friends took sword against me. However, I am not perturbed or worried about such criticisms as this is my view. We . Hindis started calling this LINGA SWARUPI as SHIVA literally meaning AUSPICIOUS, KIND, GRACIOUS etc.

However, after the so called ARYANS TRIBES (literal meaning refined) came, they thought that depicting GOD as linga swaroopi was not good and hence named him as VISHNU meaning “ All pervador “ and gave a formal form of man. They even changed the name of Lord Shiva as RUDRA, must be due to fear. Nevertheless , I feel these names are all to describe GOD. As Adi Sankara put it :

““shivAya vishnu-rUpAya shiva-rUpAya vishnave;shivasya hRdayaM vishnur vishnos ta hRdayaM shivaHyathA shivamayo vishnur evaM vishnumayaH shivaH; yathAntaraM na pashyAmi tathA me svastir AyuSaH”

“ BahvRca Parishishta”

“Vishnu is the form of Shiva and Shiva is the form of Vishnu, Vishnu is Shiva’s heart and Shiva is Vishnu’s heart. Just as Vishnu is full of Shiva and Shiva is full of Vishnu, and I can thus see no difference between Them, let me similarly have a long life." Meaning as given by Sri. P.R.RAMACHANDER.

There is one passage praising ASWATHA VRUKSHA or BANYAN TREE. In this, it is said :-

“Moolatho Brahma roopaya, madhyatho Vishnu roopine,Agratha shiva roopaya Vruksha rajaya they nama. 1”
“My salutations to the king of trees.Whose root is the form of Brahma,Middle is the form of Lord Vishnu,And top is the form of Lord Shiva” Sri. P.R. Ramachander

Moolam means ROOT, MIDDLE is TRUNK AGRA means TOP PORTION CONTAINING BRANCHES AND LEAVES.

These are all three forms of GOD to show the three actions (1) Creation (2) Conservation and (3) Destruction. All the three actions are required for the existence of the WORLD. Without creation one cannot conserve and without destruction one cannot create We Hindus believe in re-birth. As the great poet Kabir . the mendicant poet, said “when the cloth becomes dirty” it is to be changed. The ATMA will not perish but the form only perishes as per our belief. As Poonthanam the Baktha Kavi in his Great Work JNAANAPAANA “ അമരന്‍മാര്‍ മരങ്ങളായീതുന്നു, അജം ചത്തു ഗജമായ് പിറക്കുന്നു…………..” , the AATHMA will take the shape of another as per our deeds. The ATHMA is imperishable.

Now again coming to GOD, as Adi Shankara said GOD IS OMNIPRESENT, OMNI POTENT AND OMICIENT. But is only a witness to all our deeds irrespective whether it is good or bad and is NIRGUNA BRAHMAM. To attain that God, as a prelude we may pray to our ISHTA DEVATHA or KULA DAIVAM or any deity. Although, GOD is AROOPI ,
As ordinary people , we cannot concentrate, and to get concentration we can keep IDOLS.

According to H.H. Ramanuja, God is SAGUNA. meaning “Indian the name Saguna means- virtuous.”. This does not seems to me as appropriate to define GOD since He might be virtuous to me but to some other person HE might not be virtuous. Hence in my humble opinion GOD HAS NO VIRTUES as Adi Shankara said. Readers, I request you to kindly note that these views are entirely mine and no body else need to follow it. . VIRTUE is a word which is very vague, since there is not only GOOD VIRTUES BUT BAD VIRTUES ALSO. To attain this Brahmam which is NIRGUNA our ATHMA has to toil so that we can get JEEVAN MUKTHI and attain NIRGUNA BRAHMA. However. HH. Ramanuja also believes in ONE GOD. He calls GOD as VISHNU.

Friends, I do not like to say , as there can be difference in faith. by what name we must call PARABRAHMA , but GOD is only ONE.

NAMBOOTHRI BRAHMINS OF KERALA

Friends.

I have been writing about various types of Brahmins. Now I am venturing into a very peculiar type of Brahmins i.e. KERALA’S FAMOUS NAMOOTHIRIS.

In India, if we are to say who are the most orthodox among Brahmins , they are this famous section of Brahmins called NAMBOOTHIRIS. In fact, even if a Namboothiri is highly educated, he invariably study VEDAS and rituals especially the retuals in temples. You can find Namboothiri Priests, in most of the temples in KERLA and many GREAT TEMPLES like BADARINATH TEMPLE, MOOKAMBIKA TEMPLE, PASUPATHINATH TEMPLE of NEPAL and many AYYAPPA TEMPLES etc. In fact, they are the chief priests of these temples.

The Word NAMBOOTHIRI MUST HAVE COME EITHER from the words NAMBU meaning BELIEVE and THIRI to show respect as upper caste, or blessed. Here is one more which I feel is apt. It must be a pollution of the words നമ്മുടെ തംപുരാന്‍ in Malayalam

In Tamil there is a word நம் தம்பிரான் meaning our Lord or God. Since I am of the view that Malayalam is the off shoot of KOTUMTHAMIZH ( கொடும் தமிழ் ) I feel, Namboothiri, is the short form of നമ്മുടെ തംപിരാന്‍. Or in Tamil நம் தம்பிரான்

They belong to PANCHA DRAVIDA BRAHMINS whose list is given below:-
Namboothiri Brahmins, , Embranthiris, Pushpaka Brahmins (Ambalavasis), Sharada Brahmins, Etc. In fact “They have the sole right of conducting rituals in Kerala and Kanyakumari of Tamil Nadu. Some major Mahakshetras around India (including North India) have a Nambudiri priest as the Head Tantri. Only “ ( WIKIPEDIA).

While we, IYERS perform POOJA as per Vedantha and UTHARA MIMAMSA, the Namboothiris of Kerala perform Poojas as per POORVA MIMAMSA i.e. THANTRA VIDHI. They were very orthodox and at present their orhodoxy is slightly reduced,
In fact even if an EMBANTHIRI OR IYER , IYENEGAR or any other brahmin touch them they used to take bath, since they condider it as ASHUDHAM. This rigidity made them not to take part in the last rights of the MOTHER OF ADI SHANKARA since the Sanyasins are considered as those who have renunciated from all worldly affairs including father , mother, house etc. Adi Shankata promised his mother, before he became SANYASI, that he woud go to her when she was in death bed and perform all retuals after her death which he did although it was against the principles of SANYASA. This is just to show their regidity as brahmins.

MIGRATION

Nambbothiris are believed to have migrated from THULU NAADU . In SANGAM LITERATURES it is given that the present THALIPPARAMBA known previously as
Perumchellur ( in KOLATHU NADU Old Name ) is the most important village of the Namboothiris and called it as Vedic Village. It is said that Parasurama gave 32 villages which are on the southern side of the river CHANDRAGIRI upto the river KANVANNUR in CHERPU of the present THRISSUR DT. The List of Namboothiri Gramams is given below :

Payyannur, 2) Perumchellur, 3) Alathur, 4) Kaaranthola, 5) Chokiram alias Sukapuram, 6) Panniyur, 7) Karikkat, 8) Isanamangalam, 9) Thrssivaperur and 10) Peruvanam; These villages are between the Rivers Perumpuzha and Karumanpuzha
(11) Chaamunda, 12) Irungatikkutal, 13) Avattiputhur, 14) Paravur, 15) Airanikkalam, 16) Muzhikulam, 17) Kulavur, 18) Atavur, 19) Chenganatu, 20) Ilibhyam, 21) Uliyannur, 22) Kalutanatu; These settlements are between the rivers Karimpuzha and Churni.
(23) Ettumanur, 24) Kumaaranallur, 25) Katamaruku, 26) Aranmula, 27) Thiruvalla, 28) Kitangur, 29) Chengannur, 30) Kaviyur, 31) Venmani, 32) Neermanna. These Namoothiri Gramams are between the rivers CHURNI and KANAYAKUMARI.
All Namboothiris originally belong to one of these villages.
A list of original NAMBOOTHIRIS is given below :=

(1) AADU , Specialists in performing Yagas who have the sole right to perform Yaga.
(2) EDU who are specialists in astrology , astronomy , Sanskrit , Vedas etc.
(3) BIKSHA or colloquially PICHA Namboothiris are Othikkans who help the main priest in Temples and also some of them are Sanyasins.
(4) OTHU Namboothirirs who are basically teachers who teach Vedas etc.
(5) SHANTHI Namoothiris who perform poojas in temples or priestly class
(6) ADUKKALA Namboothiris are specialists in cooking in temples , for marriages etc.
(7) CHATHTHIRA NANMBUTHIRIS who are either soldiers in this caste and famous for SANGHA KKALI.. They are also known as ARANGU Namboothiris.
(8) PANTHI NAMBUTHIRIS such as Panthi Graamani, Thangal, Vaal-Nambi and
Ashtavaidyans (all Mooss families except Vaidhyamadham) belong to this
category. Vaidhyamadham, though an Ashtavaidyan, belongs to Aadu claass as
they are the Vaidyans in the Yaagasaala (the hall where Yaagam is performed).
Mooss families are not included in the above eight classes as these physicians
perform surgery. Graamani Namboothiris, Thangal Namboothiris and Vaal
Nambis are Namboothiris performing village administration and hence excluded
from the above eight classes.

Some Nambuthiris have titles as BHATTATHIRI which is given to them by the Zamorins of Calicut during the famous PATTATHTHANAM ( പട്ടം means Title
താനം means giving ceremony )for proficiencies in various subjects. (Now-a-days this is given by universities and certain institutes.) There are three types of Bhattathiris Viz. SMARTHA BHATTATHIRIS, SHASTRA BAHTTATHIRIS and BHAGAVATHA BHATTATHIRIS. Some famous Bhattathiris are MELPATHIR NARAYANA BHATTATHIRI who wrote the famous NARAYANEEYAM which is a condensed edition of Maha Bhagavatha , since he was told to write (മത്സ്യം തൊട്ടു കഴിയ്ക്കുക ) by the famous THUNJATHU EZHUTHTHACHCHAN , as a cure for his rheumatic problem.; Polpaya Bhattathiripad: Pandamparambath Bhattathiripad (Ashta Grihathil Aadhyan families); Kunnathur Padinjaredath Bhattathiripad (Aadu), Manjappatta Bhattathiripad, Avinjikkad Bhattathiripad (both Edu) . .

I am still confused to write whether the NAMBOOTHIRIS WERE BROUGHT BY LORD PARASURAMA to KERALA which he discovered or resurrected from the Arabian sea and gave as gift, the land called Parasurama Kshethra which extended from Kanyakumari to Gokarna , to get the sin of killing his mother warded off. I leave it to the experts in the subject. There is a story that the soil of Parasurama Kshethra was saltish and nothing could be grown in that area and hence the Brahmins refused to accept this area as gift and hence Parasurama begged the king of snakes to make the land fertile by snake poison.. After that the land became fertile and the Brahmins accepted it as gift. The famous Sarpa Kavus (Snake Temples) owned by Namboothiris are MANNARSALA which is about 3 Kms from Haripad in Alapuzha Dt., Kerala and PAAMBUMEKKAT MANA near Guruvayur in Trichur Dt. I feel that there must be some connection with these Snake temples and Parasurama Kshethra which was gifted to Namboothiris. I also feel that among Dravidians there was caste system as among Aryans. In SREE RAMODANTHAM it is said “ पुरा विश्रवसः पुत्रॊ रावनॊ नाम राक्शस,
आसीजास्यानिजौ कुंबकर्ण विभीषणौ “ “Rakshasa is a term of contempt for Dravidians and other black aboriginals” .. Again Shree Rama after killing Ravana , in order to get pApa VimOchana for killing a Brahmin, (TO GET RID OF THE SIN OF KILLING A BRAHMIN ), built a temple in RAMESHWARAM. Hence , I am of the opinion that Namboothiris were Dravidian Brahmins who were well versed in Vedas and Thanthric method and ASTROLOGY, unlike Tamil Brahmins who follow Vedangas and Manthric Method.

AZVANCHERRY THAMRAKKAL

There is a saying in Malayalam. “ എല്ലാ തംബ്രാക്കളും തംബ്രാക്കളല്ല, ആഴ്വാന്‍ചേരി തംബ്രാക്കളാണു തംബ്രാക്കള്‍ ” Thambran were known as SAMRATS who were highly learned in Vedas etc who were capable to curse or bless any one and which world happen . Ultimately the THAMBRAS after death directly join PARABRAHMA without taking rebirth . Although AADIREYIDAM OF KARIKKAT GRAMAM
Mentions 10 THAMBRAKKALS only AZHVANCHERRY THAMBRAKKALS REMAIN NOW. The legends say that Lord Parasurama made them the chief Thambrakkal of the EIGHT OR NINE REMAINING THAMBRAKKAL of the 32 Villages (GRAMAM) which he gave to the Namboothiris to atone the sin of killing his mother. It is alsom said that Azhvancherry Thambakkals were the early teachers of Adi Shankara. AZVANCHERRY MANA is is located in Athevanadu Village , Near THIRUNAVAYA in Malapuram District of Kerala Now. Brahmasree Azhavancherry Raman Valia Thambrakkal or AR Thambrakkal is the present Azhvancherry Thambrakkal. Since, I am dealing with the Nambuthiris I leave this topic here.

While Azhvancery Thambrakkal remain the Samrats , they have a Political Leader also
c.alled as Perumpadapu Swaroopam or Kuru Swaroopam who were earst while Cochin Royal Family . “Traditionally Perumpadappu Moopil is considered as the political head of all the brahmins in Kerala (spiritual head AND SAMRAT being Azhvanchery Thamprakkal
-ADHYAN NAMBOOTHIRIS
In general those who perform YAGAM in which GOAT is sacrificed are called ADHYAN NAMOOTHIRIS – AADU means GOAT.
Among Nambuthiris there are some lower class who are neither fully brahmin Namoothiris or Kshathrias. They are called PUSHPAKA BRAHMINS. There are also some separate people who are called AMBALAVASIS. They are lower to Namboothiri Caste but higher to other castes sine they wear holly thread and adhere to GAYATHRI MANTHRA.
(1) CHAKKIYARS, FEMININE GENDER : ILLATHTHAMMA , House MADHOM
(2) NAMBIARS who wear Holly Thread ( यञ्नोपवीतं ) ( பூணூல் ) പൂണൂ‍ല്‍), FG.
NANGIAR , House : MADHOM
(3) UNNI /NAMBISAN, NAMBI OR NAMBIDI : FG : ITTIYAMMA OR
BRAHMINI, House : ILLAM , MADHOM
(4) MOOTHATHU OR MOOSADU FG : MANAYAMMA , House : ILLAM
(5) ILAYATHU FG. :KUNHAMMA, ILLATHTHOMMA House : ILLAM
There are also some other AMBALAVASIS who are higher among Nairs but below Pushpaka Namboothiris, They are:

(1) WARRIARS Feminine Gender VARASYAR House VARIAM.
(2) PISHARODISFG : PISHARASYAR OR SHARASYAR House : PISHAARAM
(3) MARAAR FG MARASYAR OR AMMA House : MARAATH
(4) ADIKAL FG ADISYARAMMA HOUSE :MADHOM Since they were pure Brahmins but degraded since as priests of Bhadrakali Temple , they gave Liquor as offering to Bhadrakali.
(5) KURUKKAL FG : AMMA , House : MADHOM
(6) PODUVAL FG.PODUVALASYAR House :PODUVATHTHU
(7) There is one more about whom nothing is known much called PILAPPALLY
Some experts are of the view that all AMBALAVASIS belong to the same class.

NAMPOOTHIRIS AND GOTHRA

As Tamill Brahmins have GOTHRAMS & PRAVARAMS and CHARANAMS Namboothiris also have the same GOTHRA AND PRAVARA and CHARANA System.
OCCASIONS WHEN NAMBOOTHIRIS CHANGE THEIR GOTHRAMS

(1) As we change the Gothram when we take a child from another Gothram Namboothiris also change the GOTHRAM . i.e called DATHTHU
(2) During Marriage which they call VELI or PENN KODA (வேளி அல்லது பெண்கொடை)the girl changes her GOTHRAM , Pravaram and Charanam to her HUSBAND’S GOTHRAM like us.
(3) When there is no potent male member in the whole family or there is no male member in the whole family, they call this as “Vettirikkal" or “Sarvaswa Danam Vettirikkal” .I think DATHTHU is permitted among Tamil Brahmins also. .
VELI – VIVAHAM - MARRIAGE

Friends, there was a peculiar marriage system among NAMBOOTHIRIS till the year AD 1933 that only the eldest brother in the family should marry a NAMBOOTHIRI GIRL which they call it as VELI (வேளி, വേളി). Others were not permitted. This is as considered by them for increasing the progeny since they followed MAKKA THAYAM. They were only to learn Vedas, Sastras etc Viz. Hindu philosophy. However, since sexual urge cannot be stopped by any law or customs, they started having SAMBANDAM with other caste ladies especially NAIR girls and NON-BRAHMIN AMBALA VASI GIRLS. Hence from the year 1933 onwards marriage of other family male members with Nambootrhiri girls was permitted. Quote :-
“With the spread of western education by the late 19th century modern thought within Kerala moved towards the end of Sambandham connections between the Namboothiris and Nairs. With the passage of legislation in 1933 in the Madras Presidency district of Malabar and previously in the princely states of Travancore and Cochin, by which Sambandham was considered equal to "Veli" or legitimate marriage, thereby giving right of succession to the non Namboothiri children of Namboothiri men to their paternal estate, within a short period of less than a decade, the Sambandham system of informal marriage which bound the Namboothiris and Nairs together came to an end.” There was another cause, that before the legislation , the NAMBOOTHIRI BOYS who could not marry from their caste , started swndling family property and gave to their concubines. Thus the family of concubines started becoming rich, and the NAMOOTHIRI FAMILIES BECAME POOR. Hence the NAMOOTHIRIS , THEMSELVES, APPRECIATED AND WELCOMED THIS CHANGE.

NAMBOOTHIRI MARRIAGES
Namboodiris used to conduct the marriage ceremony for Four days. However, like us , they have also curtailed it to aboit 4 hours.
Namoothiri Marriages are called VELI (வேளி,വേളി ) by Bridegroom’s family and PENN KODA ( പെണ്‍ കൊഡ, பெண் கொட ) by the bride’ family. They call the bride as KUDY {குடி, കുഡി). The marriage ceremonies will be up-to four days. As we perform marriages in the Bride’s house or Marriage Hall fixed by the Bride’s family, Namboothiris also conduct marriages by the bride”s family. It starts with AYANI OONU. Thali Kettu (தாலி கெட்டு, താലികെട്ടു) can be by the father of the bride or the bridegroom. Generally father of the bride,( since smruthis suggest both types of tying the THALI as in order ) performs it since the girl can perform Bali and Sraaddha of her father and mother also. This practice is in contrast with our practice.

GHOSHA SYSTEM OF NAMBUTHIRIS FOR WOMEN
The Namboothiri women are called Antherjanam ( ान्तर्जनम्) or in pure Malayalam, AKATHTHULLAVAR (അകത്തുള്ളവര്‍), Meaning"people who stays inside the house." Since they rarely go out of the house (ILLAM) either to have bath in the POND inside the ILLAM premises or to temples. During this time they completely wrap their body with clothes, carry an umbrella made of Palm leaves ( ഓല ക്കുട, ஓலக்குடை) and hide themselves within it. They used to be accompanied by a SERVANT MAID generally of Nair Caste. I have witnessed this practice. As the days progressed such practices also started vanishing as in the case of other caste /societies.

Friends, in my opinion this class of Brahmins are most intelligent, unlike we , Tamil Brahmins , learn Vedas properly which they call (ഓത്തിനു പോകുക) , except very few. They also consider PERFORMING POOJAS IN TEMPLES ( SHANTI) as accreditation to them. There was one Dr. Nambidi, a friend of mine, who had taken Doctorate in Nuclear Science performing SHANTI in a small temple which he cherished more than his real engagement as professor in a reputed college. He is no more now alive.

SOME IMPORTANT MANAS (HOUSES) OF NAMBOOTHRI BRAHMINS ARE GIVEN BELOW ( This list is not exhaustive )

Akavur Mana, Madangarli Mana, Payur Mana, Mangalathu Mana, Mannazhi Mana, PelakkAttu Mana, Muthirankottu Mana, .Madangarli Mana, Chennas Mana, Brahmakulathu Mana, Maranaattu Mana, Polpaya Mana, Desamangalam Mana, Eda Mana, Kanipayur Mana, Kanjirapilly Mana, Kadamapatta Mana, Kunnathur Patinhaaretathu Mana, Killimangalthtghu Mana, Kootallur Mana, Naicker Mana, Nenmeni Mana, Olappamanna Mana , Poomulli Mana, puzhathol Padur Mana, Pazhur Kuruthedathu Mana , Vemancheri Mana, Panayil Pazhur Mana, Payyur Mana Etc.
Before I conclude, I would like to say that EMBRANTHIRIS are POTTIS who came from TULU NADU. They are a different section of brahmins who although are VAISHNAVATES perform POOJA in LORD SHIVA TEMPLES and DEVI TEMPLES in KERALA.

Friends, opinions may differ but notwithstanding all these, I have given my views.

NORTH INDIAN METHOD OF CHECKING COMPATIBILITY
( Note : Please convert to UNICDE 8 to read the text given in Sanskrit)

While in south India we check Dina KUTA, GANA KUTA, MAHENDRA KUTA, STHREE DEERGHA, YONI, RASI, GRAHA MAITHRI, VASHYA, RAJJU VEDA, IN NORTH INDIA they CALL IT ASHTAKOOT MATCHING Viz.:1.. Varna 2. Vashya 3. Tara 4. Yoni 5. Graha Maitri 6. Gana 7. Bhakoot ( RASI KOOTA)8. Nadi . and 2 DOSHAS are RAJJU AND VEDHA.

The Varna system is followed in North India. Is from RASIS ONLY. But South Indians check VARNA from RAASIS and if it is not found conducive then check as per NAKSHATHRAS and if found agreeable the astrologers say that VARNA KUTA is compatible. Since this is not dealt by Sri. P.S. KRISHNAN, I shall explain both systems

VARNA SYSTEN FOLLOWED BY BOTH SOUTH INDIANS AND NORTH INDIANS:.

As per RASIS in which the Moon is placed in the Horoscopes :

The castes (VARNA0 is divided as per the RAASI in which the moon is situated as BRAHMANA, KSHATHRIYA, VAISYA and SHUDRA. They are as follows :-

According to the following verses :

मीनाळी कर् ‍क्कॊ विप्रः
क्षत्री मॆषो हरिर्‍ धनुः
शुभाः युग्मं तुला कुम्भं वैस्याः
कन्या व्रुषॊ म्रुगः.
Meaning : If the Raasi in which the Moon situates is one among Meena, Vrischika or Karkkataka then the Varna is BRAHMANA., If the Rasi ( House ) in which the MOON situates is one among MESHA, SIMHA or DHANUS then KSHATHRIYA ; If the House in which moon situates is Vrishabha, Thula or Kumbha then Viasya; and If the Moon is in Kanya,

AS PER NAKSHATHRAS IN WHICH THE GIRL AND BOY ARE BORN ( This method is recognized and can be adopted if there is no compatibility as per the first one. )

According to this method the stars starting from Aswini. Bharani. Krthika and Rohini are to be treated as Brahman, leaving Mrigasia as Anulomaand and Ardra as Prathiloma respectively ie. The same way other stars are also to be counted.

Then comes BHADRA THRYAM” which are Poovabhadra, Utharabhadra and Revathi They are to be treated as Brahmana , Kshathriya, and Vaisya respectively.

For those who are learners I shall tell this : BRAHMAN NAKSHATHRAS are Aswini, Panarvasu, Hastha, Moola and Poorvabhadra..

Kshathriya Stars are Bharani, Pushya, Chithra, Poorvaashaada and Utharabhadra,

Vaisya Nakshathras are Krithika, Aslesha, Swathi, Uthra and Revathi,

Shudra Nakshathras are Rohini , Makha, VishAkha and Shravana

Anuloma Nakshathras are Mrugasir, Puva Phalguni, Anuradha and Dhanishta

Prathiloma Stars are Ardra, Uthra phalguni, Jyeshta and Shatha Bhishak.

Friends I think I have given the explanation to the best of my knowledge and ability. .

According to BRUHASPATHI :

“ऎकजातिषु संयॊगः शुभः स्यादुत्तमॊत्तमः
अनुलॊमॆन संयॊगॊ भिन्न जातिषु मध्यमः
प्रतिलॊम्यॆधमॊ यॊगॊ.जाति यॊग उदाहृताः”

As per this , the compatibility of the horoscopes of a boy and a girl born in the same VARNA ( CASTE ), is highly compatible. If the boy is born in a higher caste (VARNA) then it can be considered as Madhyama. However there is no match between Prathiloma boy and girl. .

There are cancellation for this COMPATIBILITY. :

If there is Rasyadhipa compatibility in the, Horoscopes it is an antidote for Varna Koota i.e. it cancels the evil due to this compatibility..

If there is no Varna compatibility , give DANA to a Brahmin, a cow or gold, or meals, or cloth. This will ward off the evil effects. .

2. VASYA : This is checked as we check as per MUHURTHA SAMGRAHA

3. THARA KUTA : This is nothing but DINA KUTA CHECK as per our South Indian Compatibility Check.

4. GANA KUTA : This is also as we check.

5. YONI : There is no difference in this check

6. GRAHA MAITHRI : There is no difference

7.. BHAKOOT :This is also same as we check RASI KOOTA

8. NAADI KOOT : This is the same we check as RAJJU DOSHA. In this system the nakshathras are grouped in 5 types; namely KATI RAJJU, PAADA RAJJU, KANTHA RAJJU, NABHI RAJJU or Udara Rajju and SHIRO RAJJU.

While KATI RAJJU contains BHARANI, PUSHYA, PURVA PHALGUNI, ANURADA, PURVASHADA and UTHARABHADRA , PAADA RAJJU contains ASWINI, ASLESHA, MAKHA, JYESHTA, MOOLA and REVATHY. KANTA RAJJU contains ROHINI,ARDRA, HASTHA, SWATHY, SHRAVANA and SHATHABHISHAK.
UDARA RAJJU contains KRITHIKA, PUNARVASU, UTHARA, VISAKHA, UTHARAASHAADA and POORVABHADRA. And SHIRI RAJJU contains DHANISHTA, CHITHRA and MRUGASHIRA.

Generally we ignore this Koota but NORTH INDIANS give importance to this Koota.
We check only Madhyama Rajju Dosha.

This is called ASHTAKOOT CHECK avoiding MADHYAMA RAJJU and VEDHA are important for both South and North Indians.

Having said this I shall now deal with ASTROLOGICAL METHOD OF TREATING GOTHRA , although many have written for and against this check.

Astrologically the GOTHRAS are divided into 7 (SEVEN) groups. It is said that both the boy and girl should not come in the same GOTHRA as prescribed herein :

RISHI NAKSHATHRAS BELONGING TO THE RISHI

1, MAREECHI : ASWINI, PUSHYA, SWATHY, ABHIJITH

2. VASISHTA BHARANI, ASLESHA, VISHAKHA, SHRAVANA

3, AAMGEERASA KRITHIKA, MAGHA, ANURADHA, DHANISHTA

4. ATHRI ROHINI, PURVAPHALGUNI,JYESHTA,
SHATHABHISHAK

5. PULASTHYA MRUGASHIRA,UTHARA, MOOLA,
PURVABHADRA
6. PULAHA ARDRA,HASTHA, POORVAASHAADA,
UTHARABHADRA
7. KRATHU PUNARVASU,CHITHRA, UTHARASHADA
REVATHI

The above division shows how much holloe is of our method of division of GOTHRA (SAGOTHRA)

To prove my contention I am giving the Sanskrit version below on this subject :

“ दस्रादिकानाम् ऋषयॊ मरीचि
श्रॆष्टॊवसिष्टॊ मुनिरंगिराश्च
अत्रिःपुलस्त्यः पुलः क्रितुश्च
क्रमॆणभाना मभिजिद्युतानां l”

Again :
Note : भजन्म means the nakshathra in which the Lagna Sphuta comes.

Friends, I am very clear in my statement that I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE SAGOTHRA CONCEPT OF BRAHMINS. I am of the opinion that, in this regards , we must get the boy and girl checked by a competent expert.

There are many more compatibility checks which are not much checked, of which some of them are given below :

MANA PORUTHTHAM (b) CHOLANUMOOLA PORUTHTHAM (c) PAANDYANUKOOLA PORUTHTHAM (d) REKHA PORUTHTHAM (e) ISHWARA KRUPAA PORUTHTHAM (f) VIDYAA VINAYA PORUTHTHAM (g) STHANAABHIJAATHYA PORUTHTHAM (h) SHRUTHI PORUTHTHAM (i) VAYA PPORUTHTHAM (j) AAYU PPORUTHTHAM (k) RUNA PPORUTHTHAM (l) NIRA PORUTHTHAM , (m RATHNA PORUTHTHM ETC.
GAUDA SARASWATH BRAHMINS

I had written about Sanketi Brahmin who are found in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu but mostly in Karnataka. They speak a dialect which is a mixture of Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam. Now I am giving about another Brahmin section of people who are smarthas
like us all, but considered lower in status among brahmins belonging to IYER and others. They are popularly known as GSBs or Gauda Saraswath Brahmin, I have also a doubt that
they derived the name from their GURU and founder , GAUDACHARYA and from the
the river Saraswathi since they came from thwe villages on the banks of this mythical river.

According to WIKIPEDIA :-

“The exact origin of the Saraswat Brahmins is difficult to ascertain. The Saraswat Brahmins are mentioned in the Vedas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata and even in the Bhavisyottara Purana.Either they may have come from Central Asia to the Indian sub-continent through the Hindu-Kush mountains and the Khyber pass to south in about 2000-1500 B.C or they were Indigenous”

There are two different versions about their origin. According to one version they are the off-springs of Goddess SARASWATHY, the mother of Knowledge. The other one which is believed by many writers of History, is that they are Brahmins who came from villages which were on the banks of the mythical river, the Saraswathy. There are two types of Gauda Saraswath Brahmins Viz : followers of (1) GAUDACHARYA. (2) Followers of Madhwacharya.

Friends, I had written that Adi Shankara was the disciple of Govinndacharya whose Guru or Preceptor was Gaudacharya who taught monism or ADVAITHA to HH.Govindacharya who in turn taught HH. Adi Shankara. Although, we consider them inferior to us because they eat fish etc, they are the first followers of ADVAITHA preached by GAUDACHARYA, who is Adi Shankara’s preceptor’s preceptor., The first Mutt of Gaudacharya was constructed by these Gauda Saraswat Brahmins in Goa at KELOSHI which was destructed by portughese and hence they rebuilt it in another part of Goa called KAVALE MUTT which is considered as the ADI MUTT by Gauda Saraswath Brahmins. “They derived their name from either the river Saraswati or from their spiritual leader Great Sage Saraswat Muni who lived on the banks of the River Saraswati. These Brahmins were one of the Pancha Gowda Brahmin groups who lived north of the Vindhyas. They belonged to Smarta tradition and primarily worshiped the five deities: Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya and Ganesha.”However, when MADHWACHARYA while returning from North India to UDUPI came via GOA and converted few of then to MADHWA CULT.
These Brahmins can be seen in KERALA especially in erstwhile North Malabar, Koshikode, Eranakulam etc. At Eranakulam, they have built a temple called THIRUMALA VEKATESWARAR TEMPLE. There is a story about this Temple
“STORY OF THE COCHIN VENKATEWARA DEITY”
“Sri Vijayindra Tirtha of Kumbakonam mutt gave this magnificent idol of Lord Venkatewara to the GSB community at Cochin.
The story
During 15th Century AD, the Vijayanagar Kingdom was ruled by a pious king Saluva Narasimha, one of the popular royal dynasties of ancient India. This king was an ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati and used to visit the temple by walking up the hill for worship. When the king became old, and incapable to walk, it is said that the king's prayers were answered by the Lord.
One day a sculptor appeared before him and agreed to make an idol of the Lord for his daily worship. The king gave the sculptor the required materials for making the idol and the sculptor shut himself up in a room. As he did not come out of the room even after a reasonably long period, the room was broken open only to see the idol of the Lord, the sculptor missing. It is believed that the Lord himself came as the sculptor and the idol is considered as Swayambhu or self born. The king built a temple for the idol and he was instructed by the Lord in his dreams to consecrate the idol during the auspicious time, when the heavenly drums dundubhi would be heard. As fate would have it, some crows happened to fly over the royal drums with twigs in their beaks and the twigs accidentally dropped on the drums producing a sound, which was mistaken for the auspicious hour indicated by the Lord. The idol was duely consecrated at that hour which was inauspicious. The grief stricken king was pacified by the Lord in his dreams that He would remain with him till his death, after which he would leave for a place by name Gosripuram. After the demise of the king, a great fire broke out in the kingdom and the idol was thrown into a dilapidated well. As the legend has it, Swami Vijayendra Thirtha of Sree Kumbhakonam Mutt who happened to traverse that region during one of his tours, is said to have been led by a serpent to the well wherein the idol of the Lord was deposited. The Swamiji recovered the idol from the well and started worshipping the idol along with his other idols. Swami Vijayendra Tirtha visited Cochin and performed Chaturmasa Vrita among the Gowda Saraswat Brahmin Community of Cochin. Upon seeing the radiance of the idol, the community of Cochin under the leadership of Sri Mala Pai, requested the idol from the Swamiji. The Swamiji agreed to hand over the idol in exchange for a heap of gold coins that would immerse the idol. All the gold coins brought in by the wealthy Mala Pai could cover only the body of the idol and not its tip. It was presumed that the Lord did not want to stay at cochin as a property of an individual. Only gold coins and ornaments brought in from the home of every community member could cover the tip of the idol. Kanakabishekam, a symbolic ritual of this immersion of the idol in gold is performed to the Lord even to this day during any special occasion.”
I feel these section of GAUD SARASWATHS belong to MADHWA tradition. Who are called Vaishnava Saraswats .
In Kerala these brahmins are called കൊങ്ങിണി ചെട്ടികള്‍. ( KONGINI CHETTIKAL ), although, they are also Brahmins like us.
The following are the MUTTS OF GAUDA SARSWATH BRAHMINS in which TWO are of Gauda Saraswat Brahmins belonging to MADHWA TRADITINS AND THE OTHER TWO OF ADVAITHA TRADITION respectively ::-
(1) SRI. KASHI MUTT of Varanasi (2) GOKARNA MUTT ( Both MADHWA SAMPRADAYA )
(3) SRI CHITRAPUR MUTT AND (4) SRI GAUDA PAADAACHAARYA MUTT both
ADVAITHA SCHOOL OF THOUGHT.

The subects in Gauda Saraswath Brahmins are VENSARKAR, ASGAONKAR,SHIRODKAR,GAVASKAR,TENDULKAR,WAGLE, RAJADYAKSHA MALLAYAS, SHENOYS, PAIS, KAMATHS, KINIS, NAYAK, BALIGAS, BHATTS, ACHARYAS, VAADYARS, PUROHITS, PRABHUS Etc.

Among Gauda Saraswath Brahmins, we see some wearing one NAMA in Red Sindhoor vertically and some others wearing Bhasma in parallel. three rows on their foreheads. . This must be because some adhered to their original SMARTHA TRADITION and others converted to MADHA TRADITION. Friends, among tamil Brahmins also we see in Palakkad some wearing one red Nama and others wearing Bhasma. In west Village of Pallassana most of the Brahmins wear GOPI CHANDANA on their forehead.

Friends, a peculiarity with Gauda Sarasath Brahmins is that some of them adopted their surnames as the village of origin and others their profession..

They all belong to one or the other Gothra as we all belong such as Bharadwaja, Kausika,
Srivatsa. Kaundinya, Kashapa, Atri, Vasishta, Viswamithra, Garga , Bhargava etc.

They also conduct UPANAYANAM like us which they call MUNJI ( Probably a KONKINI derivation for Upanayanam ) to boys when they attain 8 years of age. They have also KULADAIVAM like us.

The SMARTHA GAUDA SARASWATH BRAHMINS believe in MANGESH TEMPLE which is in Goa dedicated to Lord Shiva. I have gone to this old temple which they say is 400 years old. They, in general believe in Five deities in the form of Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Surya and Ganapati. ( PANCHAYATHA}.like us ( आदित्य्मंबिकां विष्णुं गणनाथं महॆश्वरं ) SHIVA PANCHAYATHANA POOJA.

Just like we brahmins, they also perform marriage by performing VARA POOJA, Naandi NISCHITHAMBOOLAM Etc.

They do not give or take girls from their own GOTHRA as we brahmins follow. Some of the Gothras to which they belong are given below :- (1) BHARDWAJA (2) KAUSIKA (3) SREEVATSA (4) KASHYAPA (5) KAUNDINYA (6) ATHRI (7) VASISHTA (8) GAUTHAMA etc. They perform Thrikala Sandhya Vandana like us

The death ceremony is also for 13 days like us and they also cremate the body.In short, they also follow all the rituals which we perform . It is unfortunate that they are not treated at par with all brahims although there are mention about them in our VEDAS, SHASTRAS etc.

THE RIVER SARASWATHI
,
There are many legends about the mystic and legendary river The Saraswathi. We all revere Goddess Saraswathy as the mother of learning also. During KALASA POOJA when we perform archana on KALASA we always chant the names of Hindus’ sacred rivers thus : “ गंगयै नमः, गोदावर्रै नमः, सरस्वथ्त्है नमः नर्म्मदायै नमः , सिन्धवे नमः. We also chant “ गन्गे चा यमुने चैव गोदावरी सरस्वति ,नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरी जलेस्मिन सन्निधिं कुरु “ Why ancient Hindus treated them as sacred is our survival itself was based on them. Our ancestors were living on the sides of the river beds from where our civilization started. when we read the Vedas we find many tantalizing descriptions of this mystic river . But, there is no one now who has seen it. When I went to KASI, I asked the PUROHIT there to tell me where was SARASWATHI RIVER for which, he pointed at a distance and said that the river had become ANTHERVAHINI and water from Sraswathi River could be seen in a well at that place . I felt like laughing at him. Even we were in doubts whether this river was flowing through Bharath starting from The HIMALYAS and flowing down and joining the Arabian Sea and making Rajasthan desert fertile, till we got a satellite image of the River which is given above. This discovery has helped many archaeological scientists who excavated about 1000 sites. The prehistoric town of KALIBANGAN is one of the sites in Rajasthan through which this mythological river was passing, as per the archaeological scientists, about 3000 years BC.In Rig Veda hymns in Book 10 – 75 our Indian Rivers have been described. There are 10 Rivers described in the Rig Veda thus “O Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Shutudri(Sutlej), Parushni (Iravati, Ravi), follow my praise! O Asikni (Chenab) Marudvridha, Vitasta (Jhelum), with the Arjikiya (Beas) and Sushoma (Sohan), listen!” again from the Wikipedia “Verses in Rig Veda 6-61 indicate that the Sarasvati river originated in the hills or mountains (giri), where she "burst with her strong waves the ridges of the hills (giri)". It is a matter of interpretation whether this refers only to the Himalayan foothills like the present-day Sarasvati (Sarsuti) river. “

In many texts of our Vedas, Upanishads etc. we can see the name of The River Saraswathy mentioned.
I am sure as we chant in Sankalpa about MERU PARVATHA this river was definitely flowing starting from the HIMALAYAS and through the present deserts of Rajastan making it fertile was flowing and reaching the Arabian Sea and ultimately flowing into it.

I request readers to read the passage about the “Re-discovery of River Sarasvati”
http://www/. Eshiusa.org /article Saraswathy etc and the efforts taken by our scientists to make the Rajasthan desert fertile.

Friends, in my opinion , the descriptions given in the Vedas, Puranas etrc. about our rivers, ,civilization, mountains etc are true and might have lost due to a big TSUNAMY or any other such big natural calamities.

A TRAVELOGUE FROM BANGALORE TO GOA VIA JOG FALLS, MURDESHWAR AND GOKARNA AND BACK VIA DHARWAR-HUBLI

Friends,

We, my self, my wife, Son, daughter in law and my two grand daughters went on a trip to JOG FALLS, MURDESHWAR, GOKARNA and GOA from Bangalore on 9th of October, 2010. We started exactly at 0530 hours and reached JOG FALLS by about 11.30 hours, and reached back to Bangalore on 12th of this month by about 20.30 hours. I am giving below a brief account of what I saw. The onward journey was via SHIVAMUKHA ( SHIMOGA). The road condition was horrible.

The JOG FALLS: You can see beautiful Water falls about eight in number at this place. Although there is an Electricity Generating Station, it is not working since I feel there is no enough water now. However you can see the water falls. From this place we went to MURDESHAR and stayed at NAVIN RESIDENCY A GROUP OF HOTELS of RNS Group. Here you can see a Siva Statue made by RNS Group which is a tallest Siva Statues. Yhere is also a STATUE of GEETHOPADESHA.

There is a big Temple of Lord Shiva which is one of the places where one piece of ATMA LINGA fell when Raven tried to remove it from Gokarna. The other places where the pieces fell are (1) MAHABALESHAR where the big piece of Lord's Atma Linga fell (2) DHARESHWAR temple Which is on NANGALORE - GOA HIGH WAY., (3) GUNAVANTESHARA TEMPLE which is situaed 16 Kms away on South of GOKARNA in NH 17. (4) SHEJJESHAR TEMPLE which is App. 45 Kms from GOKARNA on NH 17. These 5 Places which include MURDESHWARA are called SHIVA MUKTHI STHALAS . (PANCHA KSHETHRAS) We performed Pooja in MURDESHAWA temple and then stayed in our Room opposite to the SEA SHORE. On the next day that is 10th of October, we started at about 0730 hours and went to Gokarna. I need not tell you the Story of GOKARNA. It is the place where Lord Ganapathy placed the Atma Linga which Ravana gave him to keep and guard when he went to perform SANDHYA VANDANA (BEING A BRAHMIN) . However, Ganapathy put a condition that he would place the Linga after calling Ravana thrice and since Ravana had not completed his Sandhya Vandana , Ganesha left the Linga at this place on the ground. Ravana tried to remove the Linga, but he could not remove it . but the power of Ravana was great and the Linga broke but did not come out. . and the pieces fell in other five places. The Lord is called so because HE is so strong (MAHA BALAVAN) that HE could not be removed with even the strength of Ravana. Thus the Name MAHA BALESHWARA came. MURDESHARA CAME since ISHARA WAS broken and a piece fell at this place . MURIDA in Kannada is MURINHA in Malayalam and MURINJA in Tamil and THOKTA HUA IN HINDI. (This is my presumption) , We performed Pooja at Gokarna where the last piece of Atma Linga which could not be removed is inside water. However we could touch this Linga which is firmly fixed to the ground and broken. Apart from this there is a Square SALIGRAMA PEETHA which is unique in size and shape. . There is a GANAPATHY TEMPLE which is slightly away from this shrine but not too far. This Ganapathy is in STANDING POSTURE AND there is a hole on his head. The person who performed pooja told us that the hole on HIS head is made by Ravana when he gave a thrash on the head of GANAPATHI (Thalele kutteenappo; Sirme Thaden karneka samay ) . Now I shall tell as to why GO KARNA got the name so. GO means COW in English and KARNA means ear. Since this place is located between The Rivers Gangavali and Agasthini which is a confluence of the rivers and which is ear shaped, it is called GOKARNA. The place gets its name from the local legend that Lord Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow. From Gokarna we went to GOA and stayed in HOTEL HOLIDAY INN. It is a package deal. Being a five starred hotel, the meals including breakfast were free and excellent. The room was good and staff very courteous and pleasing. There is nothing much to see there for people like me except the SEA, journey in a boat to see wild black Dolphins, and a trip arranged by the INN to see GOA in which they arranged a trip in a big steamer for about an hour or so. They first took us to a temple called MangeshwarTemple dedicated to Lord SHIVA. The guide told us hat it is 400 years old temple but which was not at all worth going and seeing, then to St. Xavier'church in Old Goa. It was a pleasure to me to see the body of the Saint in tact ,which is kept on top. Although the body is fully shrunk and covered by skin only, it is really a marvel. I also enjoyed the trap in the steamer. Children enjoyed sea bath and swimming in the pool of the INN. The journey towards BANGALORE from GOA via DHARWAR and HUBLI was very tedious and about 700 Kames. The road condition is very good. I was dead tired; even I could not get up on the next day. This is a small detail of our journey... Regards to all
